A remarkably detailed historical account

Lilo Quintero Weaver's understated and elegant memoir of growing up in the south during the upheaval and fast-moving changes of the Civil Rights era, told in Darkroom, is stunning, not only for its beautifully rendered imagery but also for its heartfelt text. This is a story told from a unique perspective. Weaver's family, having moved to the States in the `60s from Argentina, are outsiders somewhat to the racial divide they move into. And yet they are part of it as well. Where they fit, and how they fit, in this divided city defines them and makes them unwitting witnesses to a nation in turmoil.

Darkroom is a remarkably detailed historical account. Weaver began the book as an undergrad five years ago. Over time, she filled these pages not just with her own family's personal story, but also the story of the Civil Rights movement itself, told in pieces large and small.

There is much to give this story heft. Weaver wisely lets the story unfold slowly and without great fanfare, focusing instead on the human lives inside it.

Baby Boomers will enjoy this and want to share it with children and grandchildren

I grew up in the Sixties and spent time in the small Alabama town where the author lived. It was a time and place where teenage white boys addressed middle-aged black men by their first names and middle-aged black men addressed teenaged white boys as "siree." The author draws readers in with stark details. She pulls no punches while avoiding a temptation to throw stones. I've known all the types of people she described, in Marion and throughout the world.

I've often reflected on those times, that little town, in my formative years thinking I should write a book to try and explain it as much to myself perhaps as to my grandchildren. Reading Darkroom has helped me process my experiences from a unique perspective, neither that of a white person entrenched in the status quo, nor a black person struggling with American apartheid, but an embedded immigrant observer bearing witness to the darker side of our human condition.

This is an excellent book written and illustrated in the style of the graphic novel. The drawings are beautifully rendered charcoals drawn from 1st-hand experiences. Lila's spellbinding story and masterful drawings of her childhood in the Jim Crow south make the book difficult to put down. While the reading level would be appropriate for children in 4th-8th grade, it is also a great read for any adult or young adult. I highly recommend this book. As an educator, I feel books like Darkroom should be required reading during the middle grades.

McMahon demonstrates the fundamental link between American colonial policy and the Cold War, showing that the official attitude toward Indonesia was determined by a global geopolitical strategy aimed at containing communism. His study places American policy in Southeast Asia, particularly Vietnam, in historical context by discussing the roots of that policy and comparing the cases on Indonesia and Indochina.

About the Author

 

Bruce Evans is the EMS Chief at the North Las Vegas Fire Department in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Mr. Evans is an NFPA Fire Instructor III and coordinates the College of Southern Nevada’s Fire Technology programs teaching various fire and EMS topics.  Bruce has over 25 years experience in a variety of EMS settings.  Bruce is an adjunct faculty of the National Fire Academy in the EMS, Incident Management, and Terrorism Training programs.  He holds a Masters degree in Public Administration, Bachelors degree in Education, and Associates in Fire Management.  Bruce is a certified faculty for the International Public Safety Leadership and Ethics training with Phi theta Kappa.  Mr. Evans publishes the bi-monthly column EMS Viewpoints in Fire Chief Magazine and is on the editorial board of for the Journal of Emergency Medical Services.  He is also a board member for the Cyanide Treatment Coalition.

 

Jeff T. Dyar, B.S. NREMT started his career as a volunteer EMS provider in a small rural town, 36 years ago.  As with many idealistic and motivated young persons at the time, he was consumed and captured forever by the television show, “Emergency”. Not long after becoming an EMT he enlisted and served as a combat medic during the Vietnam war.    Jeff describes himself as first a teacher and then a provider and has held positions in public, private, military, and federal capacities focusing on EMS.   Known as the architect of EMS management programs at the National Fire Academy, he spent nearly twelve years in the post of Program Chair for EMS in Emmitsburg, Maryland.   He also responded with FEMA to dozens of national emergencies and achieved the level of Chief of Operations at the National Interagency Operation Center in Washington, D.C. Over the years James O. Page mentored and tormented him to bring leadership and meaning to national EMS.  Advocating partnerships and breaking down walls is his forte and many a student attending courses at NFA remember him saying, “What opportunity does this situation or problem offer you?” In 1999 Jeff received the James O. Page Award for contributions to advancing EMS on a national level, given by the EMS Section of the International Association of Fire Chiefs.Ironically, Jeff and his wife Val, landed back in a small rural town in Colorado, where he serves on the Board of Directors of a fire protection district providing ALS level EMS services to a 258 square mile response area.

Most complete Management book yet......

This book was great from cover to cover, it gives practical application to all present and future EMS leaders. The authors combination of experience and knowledge was a perfect mix to the book. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to excel in EMS, as well as schools to put in there current EMS curriculum.

Good information for the future EMS leader

This book has lots of useful information in it. It was required for the class I was taking, but I would recommend it to anyone who may already be in a leadership/managerial position with an EMS organization or that is wanting to be in the future. It covers many topics that are pertinent to any management position. Budgets, human resources, customer service, marketing, career development, incident management, etc. Good layout and pretty easy to read.

Kindle version is extremely frustrating

I'm changing my original 2 star review below to 4 stars. While I'm still very frustrated because the control characters are too small to read on a kindle, the material is too good for me to discourage people from reading this book. The material is excellent and I've learned a lot just from the text. Once you've outgrown the beginners Photoshop books this is a great book on more advanced techniques.

I'm really frustrated with the kindle version of this book. They symbols he uses for the control, alt, and shift keys are way too small to make out. If I ever get over being mad, I'll probably buy the paper version of the book. The content seems to be that good. Too bad it's not usable in this form

A great reference for PS CC

This book has so many good tips. I bought it for a class, didn't really end up needing it, but kept it anyways because it's a pretty good resource. I know we live in an age where we can just Google anything we have a question about, but sometimes it seems I can't quite word my inquiry properly and I'm left frustrated. This book fills in the gaps. As a side note, the accompanying videos are hilariously awful. They also contain good info, but the editing is quite amusing. I recommend this book if you are like me and prefer to have a physical reference available in addition to the Internet.

About the Author

Matthias C. Hühne: the author is a property developer and owner of Callisto Publishers. His primary occupation since graduating from Harvard College in 1989 has been the development of high quality commercial and residential real estate projects. Hühne left his position as project manager with U.S. real estate pioneer Gerald D. Hines to found his own award-winning development company in 1996, and an architectural services firm a few years later. He collects and supports modern art as well as North American native art, and takes a special interest in commercial design and the history of architecture. Buy this standard edition for the power of content, the premium edition for the glory of expression.

Cunard's "Getting there is half the fun!" slogan survived in our minds well past the steamship age into the first half of the mass airline transport age. This book tells you how and why.

Lacking the knock-down, stunning graphics of the Airline Visual Identity: 1945-1975 Premium Edition it does have nearly all the same content (384 pages in the standard edition, 436 pages in the premium edition). The posters are there, just not reproduced with the expensive (and beautiful) processes that make the premium edition a collector's piece.

What you do get is an enormous volume on the development of corporate identity and branding in the airline industry, coupled with background on the professionals involved--the graphics designers, the illustrators, the marketers--and the decisions they faced.

I'm going to spend a lot of time in this book and, in a year, it will be worn, full of dog-eared pages and sticky notes, and marked by coffee spills and muffin crumbs. (Should I admit paint spills, too, because I plan to keep this book in the studio for inspiration?) By then, I hope to be able to afford the Premium Edition, too, just to have and hold in my permanent library for the beauty of its content.

A graphically beautiful book, showing posters and adverts from a time when travel was a pleasure and not a chore. This is a great alternate to the more expensive edition,. This book is a must for any advertising, aviation, Mid-Century design fan!
