A one stop resource for turning you Pi almost any kind of server
By David H
What a great little book. Whether it be turning your Raspberry Pi into a media centre, web server, streaming server or game server, this book provides concise instructions on how to do it and all in one resource.
Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the Pi (much of which I skipped as I've set up a Pi with Raspbian several times), but there were some useful section about peripherals you can use with the Pi. Chapter 2 then dealt with networking (Wifi and LAN) but included a very useful section on Dynamic DNS allowing you to access your Pi from the outside world even if your IP address changes. Chapter 3 deals with configuring some extra features (some useful and needed for later chapters). These 3 chapters prepare you and the Pi for the chapters that follow.
Chapter 4 provides instruction on setting up a PHP webserver and database. I went a bit further than this and installed Wordpress onto the Pi and had it up and running perfectly! A file server is set up in chapter 5. Learning how to mount/remount drives was a great bit of information for me. Chapter 6 and 7 cover setting up a game server and Bitcoin pools and mining. Neither of which I have much interest in but they provided some useful background information on the topics. Chapter 8 covers streaming video. I didn't realise it was possible with a Pi. An ideal solution if you want something small in a remote location! Lastly, chapter 9 deals with setting up the Pi ad a media centre. Again, very useful chapter. The only thing missing from the Pi in this regard (not the book) is Netflix. Maybe one day!
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Easy to follow. Concise instructions. And having the instructions all in one place is great. For me, this book is a keeper.

Read it to learn how to create a low cost server
By Raúl
I would totally suggest this book for people initiating into the Raspberry scene, because it guides you line by line into how to configure the board, how the Linux Operative System works as well as pointing out the hardware limitations, those that could be circumvent with USB ad-ons. In simple words, this book could be described as the introductory offline tutorial to RasberryPi.
Other interesting topics mentioned inside this book are the Bitcoin mining, local/internet remote access, video game emulator and media streamer. Those are just starting points, but people acquiring this hardware already have the seed of curiosity, and this book will guide you through your initial steps.
On the black side, some Linux experience would be necessary to fully understand what the book is talking about, which might be a yellow flag for total newbies or someone that want it done, without knowing how it works. Apart from that, a deserved weekend lecture.

Raspberry Pi as your House Automation Center: Almost
By Robin T. Wernick
The area of server administration, design, and programming has been well explored over the past twenty years. This is the first book devoted to exploring this interesting area of application for the Raspberry Pi. I am currently exploring a number of uses for the Pi around the home and the information contained in this book goes a long way toward helping me make it a convenient center for 24/7 computer services. However, the book is an uncomfortably short 94 pages for the price.
Although this book's server information should be specific to Raspberry Pi's highly constrained package environment an entire chapter is devoted to mining Bit-coins. I consider this to be a gross violation of the book's title. In a book limited to only 94 pages of information, spending ten pages of this extremely limited space on this frivolous and unrewarding area is a travesty.
On the other hand, the author does address how to put a web server and a file server on the Pi. In addition he shows us an amazingly powerful 2-200 Terabyte Raid stack extension to the Pi worthy of a main system server.
A chapter is devoted to setting up a game server and several popular game installations are included. This information could be used to relieve the family's territorial fights over the desktop without forcing the purchase of a complete computer.
The chapter on streaming video provides a central location for building an inexpensive home security system. Conceivably the most valuable chapter in the book it allows the reader to consider using video feeds from a number of different sources. If the author had explored mixing video feeds for production or doing computer based video filtering this chapter would have been worth the price of the book alone. Unfortunately, these exercises are left for the reader to complete on his own. I'm currently designing a security system that can accomodate six cameras( including a crib monitor ) for a home automation system and this information gives me a good head start.
The last chapter in the book involves itself in setting up a media center. The Pi( B+ ) is well on its way by having an HDMI connector that talks directly to large screen monitors and TVs. I'm currently running a 20 ft connection to my TV from the back of the room and it works very well. Now all I have to do is to install the desired media center software and experiment with some of my favorite recordings.
If the book had been half the price, I would have given it five stars. I'm going to half to search the internet and do a lot more experimentation to get the complete house automation package working with the Pi at the center. You will have to do the same for your own personal project. But this book is a good start on building a 24/7 Pi server that we want to have as our household communications center.
