Some people love to travel to foreign countries, Texas John loves to live in foreign countries.

Too many travelers count how many countries they go to and wear the number like a badge of honor. Tex doesn't place a lot of value in that. How much did you really learn in your 4 days in Paraguay about the people and the culture?

Tex prefers to stay and work for months or years wherever he goes. He has spent 5 years in China, a year in Japan, a year in South America, and half a year in the Philippines. He believes if you haven't worked in the country then it is impossible to understand it.

Texas John is currently in an undisclosed location in Asia.

Learned more about the Chinese from this book than from anything else I've read.

I down loaded this because it was free and I'm cheap and I always check out books about Americans teaching English abroad because some of them are quite interesting. Then I got to looking at the stupid cover picture and the dumb title and the moronic nom-de-keyboard and I thought life's too short to waste on another pile of drivel by some idiot who went someplace, got a job teaching English, stayed drunk the whole time, and embarrassed himself and his country. I really wish I could remember why I started reading it.

It doesn't matter because once I started I was hooked like a large-mouth bass. This guy is funny and he can write. Furthermore, he stayed in China an amazing FIVE YEARS. A year is a LONG time for most Americans to stay in China and many fold after a few months, which is why there are always lots of teaching jobs. And I owe him an apology because he DIDN'T stay drunk the whole time, but seems to have genuinely made a effort to do the job he was being paid for. Actually, the man is mature, intelligent, and thoughtful, but don't tell him I said so. Clearly he prefers to pass himself off as an irresponsible goofball and that's fine.

While he breaks the chapters down by year, this is basically a collection of stories. Most are funny because he's the kind of guy who finds the humor in situations even while he's cussing and pulling out his hair (or someone else's hair.) So as entertainment, the book is well worth your time. What sets it apart is that each story is followed by a "Cultural Take" comment where he explains what this incident taught him about the Chinese and the way they think.

Most Americans in Asia simply accept that the locals behave oddly (to us) and order another round of drinks. Why did this author CARE why his Chinese colleagues, friends, and enemies act the way they do? It's because he's a saleman. He worked part time in sales while in school and then went into professional sales and then became a headhunter, which is also sales because you're selling the company to the candidate and then selling the candidate to the company. And he loved sales and realized that it fits his personality. He took a job teaching English only because that was the easiest way to stay in China for an extended period.

So he was technically an educator, but that saleman's personality never went into hibernation and a salesman (a real one, not just an order taker) HAS to know what the other guy is thinking. Unless you get inside the other person's head, you can't sell him anything. So every time he interacted with the Chinese, his mind was asking, "Why are they acting like this? What are they thinking?" And with observation and some help from Chinese friends and co-workers, he started to understand Chinese culture and how it molds individual and group behaviors. That's not to say he fell in love with the Chinese way of thinking and acting. He didn't always love it, but he did start to understand it. And now he passes five years' worth of understanding along to the reader in a hilarious, fascinating book that entertains as it educates.

If you're going to China or have contact with Chinese in any way, this book is invaluable. I've even read books by Chinese authors claiming to explain Chinese culture to Westerners and I ALWAYS finish more confused than I started. I finally realized that the Chinese don't WANT us to understand them. You have to learn about them from an insider who knows the ropes and who's better with ropes than a Texan? I would LOVE to see this book marketed to professionals doing business in China. It would help them far more than the crap they're reading now. I hope Tex is at work on a book about his experiences in Latin America. I'll even be willing to pay!

Read from start to finish in one day (not impossible due to length) and laughed the entire way through the book. Knowing the author personally made it even more enjoyable and easier to relate to his experience in China. It's definitely worth buying and reading!

This particular book was rather helpful to me, for as a writer already, and knowing the pressures and demands (edits, edits, edits, and deadlines, deadlines, deadlines)besides pleasing the client and of course attract the attention of the desired reader---this book is a straightforward how-to on what you need to do inorder to meet and satisfy all the elements when writing a proposal.
The content and context are thorough and easy to understand and follow for someone experienced in proposal writing but also matter-of-fact enough for anyone desiring to dip into this specific field of writing. It also provides basic and general tips that apply to the nature and the art of writing in itself.
All in all this guide was as it's title suggests a how-to/reference for problem solving in proposal writing. I would suggest this to anyone that is interested in writing, and who does not want to restrict themselves to specific genres of writing, and want to make money in other lucrative sectors of the writing market as proposal writing.

This was written in the heyday of Compuserve and AOL. There is some timeless counsel here, but a lot of the applications are laughably outdated. It's time for Mr. Holtz to write a new edition, or for his heirs to commission a new one.

Okay- So I totally love Jo and Damon... but I think I have a new favorite couple. Russ and Lindsay for sure. Right off from the start it's intriguing and grabs your attention with a blast from the past and then jumps straight into the future and we meet Brian's( Damon's assistant) sister and she is a sweet heart, honest, shy, timid, single mother who is working her butt off for her son and I'm sure we all know how this woman feels. Knows what it's like to be struggling and having to suck it up and do whats right. Well I know I have and I connected with her immensely and it was nice and she was real and a very enjoyable character. She has been having this chat relationship with a guy named Russ for 10 years and they have never met, just chatted on the net and via text message. And well, one day her luck runs out and she finally meets Russ and not in the way she was ever expecting. And he has a proposition for her, one she may not be able to refuse. But the thing is, she has been in love with him for 10 years and she knows by the end of the 30 days that's it. So is she willing to walk or away or stick it out? you will have to read to find out! let me tell you this though, it was AMAZING and exceeded any single expectation I ever had and I love Jo and Damon and the gang, always will... but these guys and their story I find a tiny bit more interesting and loved the whole thing. And the love Linds has for her son, it was just so sweet and it's home. Very amazing read and series and cannot wait for part 2!

I give Reach Me 5+ stars. It was a great read.

I think I have read about everything J.L.Mac has written, because I just can't get enough of her wonderful words.

I really enjoyed this book. The story line was perfect, the characters were great, the steamy parts were awesome.

I read this in one day because it was that great, just couldn't put it down.

The reality of struggle, determination, friends, love, and a hopeful future is all real in this book.

I think I fell in love with Russ. He was a mouth watering, tongue tying,claiming your soul, kinda guy. And besides that he pretty much had it all. For a man like him to wait for someone that long, and only commute through texts, has got to be one hell of a guy.

I'm not saying anything else about this book because I am not giving anything away. You just need to read it. It is just AAHhhhhhhhhh.

One of those books that just stays with you!!!

It's awesome!!!!!

In the end J.L.Mac about ripped mt heart out, stomped on it, and left it hanging for the voltures to devour. LOL
Doesn't mean I would ever stop stalking her for another book, she's a great author!!

Not what I expected

First off, I was expecting to read about Damon and Jo, his kooky, fun loving grandmother and the mystery about who is stealing her money, and watching Damon get to know his bio mom. What I didn't expect was to read about another couple. And I will say this, I wasn't none to thrilled when it wasn't about Damon and Jo. Once I got about 36% into reading and spoke to my mom, her and I began to search out why the book was written as it was about Lindsey and Russ, whom I had know idea even existed, I began to settle down and put my disappointments aside and started to really enjoy reading Reach Me. My only wish, is I wished it had been longer. A lot longer than 71 pages.

About the Author

Simon Unwin has helped students learn to think as architects for over three decades. He is Emeritus Professor of Architecture at the University of Dundee, Scotland. Previously he taught architectural design and analysis at the Welsh School of Architecture in Cardiff University. He has lived in Great Britain and Australia, and taught or lectured on his work in China, Israel, India, Sweden, Turkey, Canada and the United States as well as at other schools in the UK and Europe. Simon Unwin’s books are used in schools of architecture around the world. Analysing Architecture has been translated into Persian, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish and Korean and is currently being translated into Portuguese, Russian and Arabic. He continues to teach at the Welsh School of Architecture in Cardiff.

Outstanding text. Tiny type.

Great book by a great author. Do keep in mind, however, that in order to maintain elegant page layouts, the text was set with unnecessarily small - no, tiny - type, making it a bit of a chore to read. Pity.

Book could be good if I could actually read it. I didn't know about DRM policy and it's so annoying. DON'T BUY IT. Thanks Amazon, usually I am satisfied of shopping with you but NEVER EVER kindle format anymore.

About the Author
In 2009 Dave Conroy quit his job working with computers, sold everything he owned and bought a bicycle setting forth for a round the world journey. His travels have taken him to various parts of the globe, and he regularly writes and films the experience. His writing, photos, have appeared in many travel and bicycling related publications, and has appeared in a full length documentary titled Riding North, filmed in Canada in 2010.

Two books for the price of one - a riveting read.

I have been riding a bike for many years, learning about and acquiring snippets of wisdom along the way. Dave, like surprisingly many modern day long distance cyclists came to cycling late, and as such has been on a much steeper learning curve, which makes for a riveting read. I thought I knew a lot of the tips and tricks, such as knowing that cemetery's are a reliable source of fresh water, but Dave puts these patches of common land to an even more resourceful use, whilst always respecting his hosts. The attention to detail in this book is extraordinary, and after reading it you will know the calorific difference between the peanut and macadamia nut. His story is also a reminder that the most dangerous person you are likely to meet is yourself.

This is really two books in one, as the first few chapters go into the back story of how Dave arrived at the start of his cycling journey, which is an astonishing tale in itself, hinted at in the book's title.

An enjoyable and informative book - it even convinced me to sell my car.

Awesome Read

The author has done a great job of creating a highly readable, devastatingly honest account of what it's like to go on a long term bike tour.

I sat down and read the book in one sitting and laughed out loud many times.

If you have an interest in bike touring or dream of one day dropping the day to day routine and taking a trip then you should definitely read this book!

Reads as a Memoir - Agree Raw and Unfiltered

I like epic journeys under human power and have read hundreds of accounts of such journeys by bike, oar, foot, ski, and paddle. I started reading Tired of I.T. from that frame of mind and was not interested in the back story (that is front loaded in the book). The lack of professional editing showed, yet I have been following Dave's Twitter feed for a month or so, so felt invested to keep reading.

At some point I changed my perspective on the story and started reading it as a memoir, a window into a life that is so very different from mine, not in the bike travel, but the compulsiveness, the substance abuse, the personal internal journey that Dave is taking.The unedited writing, the reflections, the lists and the details shared start to make sense and expand my awareness of and compassion for other human beings. And, as other reviewers have mentioned, Dave has embedded some valuable cycle touring information within his memoir.

I look forward to reading his progress in life and by bike through Africa and beyond.
