Moment of history and soul

This book, which was published in the 1930s brought me back to the old times when I read it in 1999. The author was a scholar and politician of that time, and he recorded the common thoughts and understandings about Chinese arts and culture of that time. Nothing in this book was new to today's readers, but everything in this book was clearly stated in a way you seldom encounter today. The author had an impressive ability in handling Chinese cliche into English, which made reading this book enjoyable.
recommended for Chinese readers longing for good old days. Another book by this author on Chinese calligraphy is more highly recommened. That's a five star one according to me.

The real thing!

I would rank Chiang Yee as the Asian equivalent of our Western E.H. Gombrich. I did not think I would learn very much from this ancient text but was rather more interested in adding to my "Silent Traveler" collection. HOWEVER ... I was unable to put the book down and learned something new on every page! Chiang is a marvelous writer, verging on the poetic in many instances, and manages to fill the text with as much psychological insigt as facts. HIs insight and his knowledge of history in conjunction with his intimate knowledge of the art (something most critics lack) add up to a solid educational event. Virtually every aspect of the art is covered in some detail here and some wonderful examples are included. Whether you are an expert or a novice, this book is a must.

A Wonderful, Frustrating Read

On the one hand, the story is absolutely wonderful - evocative, compelling, and mesmerizing. The premise is great, although I have some questions about the long-range effects of that premise. The characters are well-developed, even the minor ones. The basic writing style is enjoyable. Following the adventures of Will, the main protagonist, has been an adventure for me as well coupled with significant lack of sleep as I am seemingly forced to keep finding out what happens next. Because of the excellence of the story, I will likely get the next book in the series.

On the other hand, the editing sucks. It is not a matter of typos. There are few of those. However, there is every manner of other types of editing errors. Many times it seems like the author dictated the book, but never read it to make sure the words came out right. So "clouds" is used instead of "crowds" or "exaggerating" instead of "exacerbating." It becomes almost a game to identify the correct word. Many sentences seem to have too few or too many words such that the sentences are indecipherable. Then there are the factual errors. Just one example - neither Gen. Grant nor Gen. Lee were at the battle of Gettysburg. The author seems compelled to contract any word structure with "had" or "could" so that it is sometimes hard to tell which is meant. Worst of all, for me, the author frequently writes as if he hasn't read his own work. There are constant errors of fact regarding things that have happened, which is frustrating and aggravating. There are annoying summaries of things that happened just chapters earlier. All of these editing errors cause the reader to stop her headlong progression to go, "What? Wait!" It is almost, almost enough to make me want to stop, but I still need to read the next chapter.

This book and this series could be one of the greats, if a final thorough edit had been done. As it is, the substantive editing errors hold this book (and all the others) back. It was a hard decision whether to give three or four stars. I chose four stars, because I want to recommend the series with the caveat that some teeth gnashing will occur.

Too bad the science is bogus

I have enjoyed this series to this point, but I don't think I will finish it.
When an author takes liberties with basic science in a science fiction story, especially when the error does not help the story, I get impatient.
The first error that caught my attention was the "below sea level" lake on an island southwest of England. Really. What causes it to drain?
In this book, our hero teleported into a cave that in a vacuum. Really?! Give me a break. And how does this help the story?
These types of errors detract from an otherwise pleasant time loop story with interesting characters and a decent love story.
I won't finish this series and I doubt I will read any more from this author. I'm sorry I wasted my time. Sorry Alex.

Will keeps his journey going in the 4th book "Birth of the Alliance". There are issues for Will but he overcomes them. He makes the Alliance to be what it should be helping people (humans) out, not like the Aliomenti which is self centered all about Me (Arthur). Will takes the Cavern and makes it a home for everyone of the Alliance. The Alliance grows. With Wills knowledge he invites things before their time which helps the Alliance. There are problems along the way but are things worked out for the good? What happens to Will.

To find out you must read the first three in the Aliomenti Saga. This is a must read book. Alex you are a great authur can't wait to read the rest of the saga and move on to other books you have written. Keep up the good work.

Full of great information, not the best for beginners

The author assumes a pretty high level of commitment to stained glass. I saw a review here where a woman said reading this rather overwhelmed her, and I can see why. Tons of equipment, a dedicated workshop laid out for maximum efficiency... maybe you were just wanting to try out a new hobby! Still, it is a great resource for information and projects, even if you just want to try out this hobby. If you are more committed, go for it.

If you are a beginner, you must look at Basic Stained Glass Making... it takes a "sure you can!" approach, and has tons of pictures to illustrate the step-by-step creation of the projects. Have fun!

I.LOVE. THIS. BOOK.

Vicki really breaks it down for you. I am a stained glass hobbyist just starting out and this has REALLY helped my improve my skills. I like having things written out for review, otherwise I tend to forget them. It has been an invaluable resource to honing this craft.

She had me saving glass in no time, improving my cutting ability and recommending the best tools for the job.

Very helpful book!

I have done stained glass work periodically over the last 30+ years, usually in a class. I'm excited to start doing it on my own again at home and when I saw an episode of Vicki Payne's show on PBS I thought having her book would be a great help, and I was right! The photos are good and clear, the descriptions are easy to understand, and even though I've taken many classes throughout the years she has tips I've never heard before. The book is very well organized and is laid out in a way that is visually interesting and easy to follow. Very glad I bought it!
