Roman's story, so much more than I expected!

Romans life changed with the death of his foster father. He blames himself and in order to cope with is guilt has taken to drinking and sleeping with whatever willing woman crosses his path. He's known as Romeo around town, his smokin hot body definitely doesn't hurt his hunt for a nightly bedmate.

And then he literally runs into a woman who won't drop her panties for him at the drop of a hat.

Franki has shut herself off from emotional entanglements, she's here for one reason and that's to find her missing sister. And then Roman throws a wrench in her plans when an accident forces her to stay in Crawley Creek for awhile. While stuck in town she's losing precious time looking for her sister, now she's forced to decide who she can trust with the truth.

Roman finds himself wanting to help Frankie, he wants her to open up to him and let him help her. Frankie needs help but she's afraid to accept it.

Can Frankie's problems help Roman with his own? Will these two be able to help heal each other along the way?

Another sexy brother from the Crawley Creek Ranch may have met his match, this time in a broken firecracker of a woman.

Roman has been life in excess -girls and beer, since the death of his foster father. He has been harboring guilt ever since he found him dead.

Franki is looking for her sister and has come to Montford after a lead. After an unfortunate accident with her bike caused by Roman she is stuck at Crawley Creek until it is fixed or her sister is found.

What they both don't expect is they help each other through the tough times ahead and find that the other person is what they needed to move forward in their lives.

Lori has written another great emotional book that allows the characters to grow and find what they don't even know they are looking for.

Each section and individual selection is preceded by a brief introduction by the editors.

The volume presents a number of pieces about twentieth-century Cuba, including the events leading up to and following Castro’s January 1959 announcement of revolution. It provides a look at Cuba in relation to the rest of the world: the effect of its revolution on Latin America and the Caribbean, its alliance with the Soviet Union from the 1960s until the collapse of the Soviet bloc in 1989, and its tumultuous relationship with the United States. The Cuba Reader also describes life in the periodo especial following the cutoff of Soviet aid and the tightening of the U.S. embargo.

Hilarious, informative...and delicious too.

I found this book on a friend's bookshelf and was instantly gripped. From the humorous front cover to the delicious-sounding back-cover recipe for "Texas Cowboy With Chili", this book is well worth reading, not only for the grim humor (which is handled, dare I say it, tastefully, and interlaced with actual, useful information) but also for the recipes. I am an experienced amateur cook, and have spent years learning how to evaluate recipes for feasability; the recipies in this book, without exception, are well-written and easy, and would not only work with "long pig" but would be delicious with other mammalian meats.
I rather wish I could give this book 4&1/2 stars; the only reason I am not giving it five is so that I have room in my judging should an even better, wittier, more deadpan and more delicious-sounding cookbook on anthropophagy come along. However, I rather doubt one will, and if one does not I will be well satisfied.

Cannibal's Cookbook (Vintage Satire, We Hope)

This is a satire, of course, with the title taken from the Twilight Zone Season 3 episode 'To Serve Man', about seemingly benign Aliens with superior technology who visit Earth...but whose motives turn out to be, ah, more culinary than charitable.

So here's a detailed cookbook spoof, a book of recipes for erstwhile cannibals. A good gag gift, and maybe for leaving out on your coffee table when the future in-laws come over.

This was probably funnier when it was first written, in a gentler, more innocent era before Hannibal Lechter and Jeffrey Dahmer.

By the way, in a different Amazon listing, someone's published a replica cover notebook of the original Twilight Zone episode prop "book" which the alien 'Kanamits' are carrying around in each scene, 'To Serve Man'. It's not an exact replica (too small, and just blank pages) but it's worth a look.

That replica book cover might be funnier to leave on the coffee table. Check it out.

Carlip's 2+1 dimensional Quantum Gravity

This is the outstanding reference and survey book for quantum gravity in 2 spatial and 1 time dimensions, and also has a number of Carlip's own recent contributions. When quantum gravity (QG for short) is restricted to 2 spatial dimensions, it simplifies analysis enormously, both physically and mathematically. I have cited Carlip's book both in papers delivered at conferences and in publications. Here is the opportunity to understand different schools of quantum gravity, including the Hawking-Hartle school and its comparison with the closely related Lortentian metric (v.s. Euclidean metric) school, the Ashtekar-Smolin loop school, the Wheeler-Dewitt equation school, the lattice school, the Feymann path integral school, the black hole entropy schools (to which both Carlip and Hawking/Penrose have contributed), various algebraic and topological schools, the incredibly rich moduli space and modular transformation results, and so on. Unlike most books, Carlip's is open minded regarding different schools, and gives comparisons and criticisms which are invaluable. The non-expert in quantum gravity would be well advised to start learning from this book and a few very clear mathematics and physics books (or to hire a consultant or even a tutor to explain prerequisites and some of the mathematical concepts in the book), because the average quantum gravity book is almost totally incomprehensible for non-experts compared with Carlip. I consider Carlip's clarity and comparisons between different schools to be far superior to even Hawking's, although of course Hawking is almost unrivaled as a physicist. The nearest you will come to Carlip's presentation is by reading hundreds of journal articles and books, which is impractical for most people.

Good introduction to quantum gravity research

When tackling difficult problems in physics, one of the most effective strategies is to study them in a domain or context where they appear more tractable. These strategies work best where there is a paucity of experimental data to guide the researcher through the conceptual search spaces where there is more temptation to engage in an excess of speculation. The quantization of gravity remains one of the most, if not the most difficult problem facing theoretical physicists today, and this in spite of much effort devoted to its resolution. Some researchers point to string theory as providing the correct path to quantum gravity, while others believe other less ambitious approaches show the most promise.

In this book, which to some because of its publication date may be somewhat out of date, the author takes a direct approach to quantum gravity in a context where some of its difficulties are still manifest but where computations can be done. Lowering the spatial dimension by one in general relativity gives a theory that has no local degrees of freedom. This may cause some to think that the theory is basically trivial, and deserves no further consideration, but the author reminds the reader that when the spacetime has a fundamental group that is nontrivial, there are a finite number of global degrees of freedom. If the reader is familiar with some of the work that has been done in topological quantum field theory, the absence of physical degrees of freedom does not entail an uninteresting theory (both in physics and mathematics).

Early on in the book, the author gives evidence as to the value in studying gravity in 2+1 dimensions, such as the fact that its point particle solutions are useful in the study of cosmic strings. But physical theories are very dependent on distance, as the discovery of quantum mechanics readily attests to. The cosmic strings the author discusses are entities that exist in the Newtonian limit of the (2+1)-dimensional theory. The physics at this scale (of "large" distances) is to be contrasted with the scales at which quantum gravity is thought to be relevant. Cosmic strings are not meaningful entities at these (very short) distances.

Classical physics is thought to be better understood than the physics of the quantum realm, and so frequently physicists undertake a study of quantum phenomena by first investigating thoroughly what happens in the classical domain. The author does not deviate from this strategy, and early on in the book he takes up the study of the classical solutions of the Einstein field equations for (2+1)-dimensional general relativity. Since the dimension of space has been lowered by 1, one might expect that there would be a plethora of exact solutions to the Einstein field equations or at least ones that are somewhat easier to find than in the usual case. An immediate issue that arises concerns the topology of the manifold, and the author approaches this first asking what three-manifolds will admit Lorentzian metrics and which manifolds admit solutions of the empty space Einstein field equations, i.e. which three-manifolds admit flat Lorentzian metrics. An interesting conclusion resulting from this discussion is that changes in topology are not permitted by the field equations, at least for the case of spatially closed three-dimensional manifolds.

Doing calculations in general relativity while respecting the unity of space and time is extremely difficult, and what is frequently done is to divide spacetime into spatial and temporal directions. One methodology for doing this is the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism, which is given detailed treatment in the book. The ADM formalism allows one to use the Hamiltonian formalism in (2+1)-dimensional gravity, and this results in a dynamical system with constraints. The author wants to interpret these constraints using an analog of what is done in a gauge theory, namely to interpret them as generators of infinitesimal gauge transformations, even though gravity is not a gauge theory. He shows explicitly that this can be done with the momentum constraints, but the Hamiltonian constraint is more problematic. This constraint generates diffeomorphisms in the time direction but "on-shell", i.e. subject to the dynamical equations of motion. But the author goes on to how diffeomorphisms can be represented as gauge transformations in (2+1)-dimensional gravity, i.e. in this case the full diffeomorphism group can be replaced by the group of pointwise gauge transformations. This makes the quantization procedure much more straightforward the author says.

And after a few more chapters of studying the classical dynamics of (2+1)-dimensional gravity, the author gets to this quantization using the ADM formalism and the York time-slicing operation (the latter is a procedure wherein spacetime is given a "foliation" by surfaces with constant mean extrinsic curvature). This strategy allows one to reduce (2+1)-dimensional gravity to a purely quantum-mechanical system with a finite number of degrees of freedom. This is astonishing at first glance, and also quite helpful since it allows the author to use the familiar tools of quantum mechanics to quantize gravity. His discussion is interesting not only because of its importance to the subject of quantum gravity, but also because of the presence of various constructions from mathematics, such as the mapping class group and automorphic functions. The presence of these functions is due to the author's choice of a torus for the spatial part of spacetime. The Schrodinger equation then involves a Hamiltonian that can be written in terms of the "Maass Laplacian", the latter of which acts on the automorphic functions. The author however shows that this quantization procedure is not unique, with many choices of Hamiltonian possible, and each of these leading to physically inequivalent theories.

This non-uniqueness in quantization procedures leads the author to consider, based on his study of the classical dynamics of (2+1)-gravity earlier in the book, alternative approaches to quantization. One of these alternatives is the viewing of the classical dynamics in terms of the geometry of flat connections. Rather than studying the evolution of the spatial geometry as done in the ADM formalism, this approach studies the evolution of the entire spacetime, and gives, as the author puts it, a kind of "Heisenberg picture" for the quantum dynamics (as compared with the "Schrodinger picture") of the ADM formalism. The quantization of the space of geometric structures (with nondegenerate metrics) is then carried out, interestingly without any need for a Hamiltonian. He also discusses how to proceed with the assumption of nondegeneracy of the metric, leading to the famous Ashtekar variables so widely used in some research circles in quantum gravity. Further analysis in a more general context, where the canonical quantization procedure of replacing Poisson brackets by commutators is replaced by a general operator algebra of holonomies leads the author to discuss the Nelson/Regge approach to quantization and its "dual": the famous Ashtekar loop representation.

A few lines are enough

A poet may live for us through a single poem, or even a few lines. For me the poet Arnold is 'Dover Beach'. " Ah Love, let us be true to one another, for the world which seems to lie before us, like a land of dreams, hath really neither joy nor light nor love nor certitude, nor peace nor help from pain, and we are here , as on a darkling plain, swept with confused alarums, of struggle and flight, where Ignorant armies clash by night."

This great poem written at the threshhold between an Age Dying and another yet to be born is Arnold's signature piece. I also however recommend, and have some knowledge of his long poem 'Sohrab and Rustum'.

Arnold is a poet whose music sometimes fades, but whose quest for moral meaning is regularly present.

He is one of those rare human beings who has written a single poem, a few lines which should be remembered for as long as poetry is read and enjoyed.

A book you'll keep forever!

DOVER BEACH & OTHER POEMS is an excellent collection of the poetry that was written over a period of Arnold's life that began with the optimism of his youth, and an abiding faith in his religious thoughts. Then, in the poems that he wrote as he grew older, we find a mellowed, and more mature concept of living, brought about by the strain, the stress, and the disillusionments that he encountered as he grew older. Arnold began to question (but not reject) many of the philosophical and spiritual values he had been taught by his father. Arnold's father was a Headmaster at Rugby, whom Matthew loved and idealized.

This is a book of poetry of an higher order that you will read once, put it back on your shelf, and then, pick it up later and read it again. With subsequent readings, you will probably enjoy the mature thought and outlook upon life that this man, Matthew Arnold, developed as he grew older. Yes, I enjoy reading this book of poetry, more and more as time goes on, particularly, "Dover Beach" and "The Scholar Gypsy". I believe you will too.

About the Author

Hermann Hesse was born in Germany in 1877 and later became a citizen of Switzerland. As a Western man profoundly affected by the mysticism of Eastern thought, he wrote novels, stories, and essays bearing a vital spiritual force that has captured the imagination and loyalty of many generations of readers. His works include Steppenwolf, Narcissus and Goldmund, and The Glass Bead Game. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946. Hermann Hesse died in 1962.

We all feel like steppenwolves at some point

This novel is supposedly the writings of Harry Haller, a lonely intellectual who feels isolated from the rest of the world. The story is the account of his existential transformation. Beyond the plot, it is an exploration, a painful one, on the hollowness, emptiness and meaninglessness of life. It talks about how lonely we really are, in the confusing and unexplainable world in which we live. It also talks about the desperation routine brings on, the fakeness of love, the necessity of death. But, in the final analysis, it also shows a probably undeserved love for life. This is not a simple "grunge" book: it's thoughtful philosophy expressed in a fine literary piece of work, which shows vividly some concepts that sometimes formal philosophy renders in abstract and obscure ways.
Harry Haller, the steppenwolf, will meet a simple woman who takes him into the life of the flesh and the simplicity of people. This is very important: Haller comes to realize, in an intuitive more than analytical way, how we all humans feel the same loneliness and confusion, but how most of us manage to live and somehow enjoy many aspects of being alive.
This is an intelligent, deep and moving novel. It is not always pleasant, but then again life is not always pleasant either. Steppenwolf is perhaps the novel in which Hesse best sums up many of the points made in his other novels, previous or subsequent. It is the round-up of a clear and interesting philosophy of life. No wonder people, especially young people, keep finding inspiration, advice and healing in his works. Maybe I shouldn't give it five stars, for it can't be compared with top-level literary masterpieces; but I think literature's importance is not only and not always stylistical. The content is important too, and at least for me, this is one of the most inspiring and memorable novels I've ever read.

I've put off writing a review for this book....

....because it meant so very much to me during a dark time in my life. I never realized how much of what we learn to see in ourselves as odd, strange, unacceptable, mentally ill, or whatnot makes perfect poetic-daimonic sense to an underground but vital chunk of fellow human beings like Hermann Hesse.
What's the book about? About one man's journey into the hell of his own being, paralleled only by the hell of a world he finds no home in; words from Hesse's DEMIAN come to mind: "My story is not a pleasant one....It is a story of nonsense and chaos, madness and dreams--like the lives of all men who stop deceiving themselves."
It's been years since I first came across this remarkable novel of the archetypally lonely man aptly named the Steppenwolf, and yet I still recall so much of it, especially the Author's Note which Hesse wrote when he felt the book was being misunderstood: pointing out that Harry Haller's (Hermann Hesse's) sufferings were opposed by a "positive, serene, superpersonal and timeless world of faith," Hesse adds, "May everyone find in it what strikes a chord in him and is of some use to him! But I would be happy if many of them were to realize that the story of the Steppenwolf pictures a disease and crisis--but not one leading to death and destruction, on the contrary: to healing."

A message of warning

I couldn't have read this book at a better time. Like a lot of American high-schoolers in the "fast track" to college, I was feeling way overworked. I never had time anymore to enjoy nature, good books or anything else. It seemed that my life was school, and nothing else.
On a whim, I picked this up. "Beneath the Wheel," or "Unterm Rad" (auf Deutsch) is the story of a brilliant young man (in the prodigy sense) who is worked to death by those who unconsciously care nothing for him, but to see his advancement.
While I never experienced anything as extreme as Hans, this book really made me question why I was doing what I was doing. Why was I working myself to death in high school? Was I learning anything? Was I growing as a person?
This book is wonderful because Hesse tells the story is such a simple and poetic way; and it is translated marvelously. Simply a joy to read. I can read it over and over again. So, take heed, reader. Enjoy this book and spend many an afternoon questioning the merits of forced education; and different systems of learning. A good technical follow-up is "Teaching As A Subersive Activity."
