Monumental, brilliant . . . and ultimately unconvincing

Prior to 1960, legal scholars invoked economics only in a handful of specialized contexts -- mostly antitrust and taxation. But it was not generally thought that economic science had much of anything useful to say about the law generally.

Then, in the early 1960s, Guido Calabresi and Ronald Coase published a couple of papers that a lot of people found pretty darned interesting.

Richard Posner was one of those people. Within about a decade thereafter, he had written a massive treatise-textbook that attempted to apply (Chicago-school) economic insights to almost the entirety of the law, in part relying on Calabresi's insights on risk allocation and Coase's famous theorem about what happens in a world with no transaction costs.

That treatise-textbook is now in its fifth edition, and you're looking at the Amazon page for it. It would be hard to name a more influential work in the field of law and economics -- and even today, as Posner himself will gladly tell you, although there are a few other _textbooks_ on the topic, there are still no other _treatises_.

Posner's scope is breathtaking. Not content to limit himself to the usual array of legal topics (property, torts, contracts, criminal law, legal procedure, and so forth), he also manages to devote portions of his text to, e.g., sex and marriage, surrogate motherhood, prostitution, homosexuality, and a host of other controversial and/or marginal topics you don't typically encounter in an economics text.

The typical reader will probably not find him altogether persuasive on these topics. In fact, if you're anything like me, you'll probably wind up shaking your head in sheer wonderment: how is it possible for someone to be so brilliantly incisive on one page and so infuriatingly obtuse on the next?

But don't assume Posner is the one who's wrong. Don't misunderstand me; I think he _is_ sometimes the one who's wrong. But even then, his arguments are something to be reckoned with, not to be easily dismissed. (Nor is he _ever_ simply "obtuse.")

For the most part I think the book is a success in its more modest aim. In the fifth edition, Posner ends his opening chapter with a short reply to critics of the law and economics movement; with much of what he has to say here I can wholeheartedly agree. His work should, as he notes, be of _some_ interest to anyone who thinks Kaldor-Hicks efficiency/potential Pareto improvement plays any role whatsoever in setting policies. (I don't personally think it plays or should play much role at all, but I can agree with the point as Posner has stated it.) And Posner notes, quite unobjectionably, that the entire field should not be rejected merely because one does not accept the views of its most aggressive exponents.

But make no mistake, Posner _is_ one of its most aggressive exponents, and the apparent modesty of his aims is somewhat disingenuous: he is not merely trying to find out what economics can say about the law but to tell us that it can say quite a lot indeed. And it is here that I find him ultimately unconvincing on a number of points.

(To take one well-known example, I don't think Posner's discussion of the famous "Hand formula" captures what Judge Billings Learned Hand meant by it, and at any rate the formula is not as useful as Posner seems to think it is. There is some good discussion of the Hand formula by Richard Wright in _Philosophical Foundations of Tort Law_, and in general Posner has been roundly and in some respects successfully criticized by a wide range of scholars from Ronald Dworkin to Gary Schwartz.)

But there is no getting around this massive work, and it absolutely cannot be lightly dismissed. On the contrary, the thing bristles with fine insights and obviously massive legal and economic erudition; most of it will repay close reading even for the reader who ends up disagreeing. If you have any interest in the field of law and economics, you really ought to read this book _sometime_.

Invaluable resource for Android developers

I have been developing native Android apps for three years using ADT and Eclipse, so I wasn't sure how much more I needed to learn about the tools themselves - I am quite comfortable with them. Picking this book up was a great choice however. The developer tools are still actively evolving, and this book covers both long-time features and brand new tools.

I learned quite a few new things about the tools I already use. It turns out I have ignored quite a few useful features in the developer tools, and am excited to make better use of them now (such as the Memory Analyzer Tool and various options to speed up the emulators).

The new Android Studio is also a great feature of the book- this is a great new development environment to develop Android apps, but it has a learning curve to come from Eclipse. I'm still getting my head around Gradle and the IntelliJ environment that are critical components of Android Studio, but I feel a bit more comfortable with it now.

There is a lot of information packed into this book (and side-notes and related topics are often shown in the form of a link for further reading). The writing style is clear though, and I quickly moved through sections I already understood to focus on the material I was not aware of.

I can't lament too much that I didn't get this book three years ago (since it hadn't been written yet), but I certainly recommend it to developers now. There's likely something for any seasoned developer, and it will be an invaluable jumpstart for new Android developers.

A unique book on mastering a dark area

One of the barriers to achieving guru-level in Android software development is the lack of great documentation. There is plenty of Android documentation in general, but way too much of it is poorly written, out of date, or wrong. Or all three at once.

That's why I am so glad to see a book like Mike Wolfson's "Android Developer Tools Essentials" come along. It's an easy read, very timely, and full of good tips. As an author of tech books myself, I know how hard this is to do right. NY Times technology correspondent David Pogue makes a pretty good living writing "The Missing Manual" for various Apple products. What Mike has produced here is "The Missing Manual for Android Developers".

Yeah, you can get by in Android, if you just know the basics of a few of the tools. But you can work faster and more productively if you buy this book, and keep it by your desk. Dip into it when you have a few spare minutes. Over the course of a month, it will build out your skills, and transform your work.

Writing an Android app inevitably means using the Android Development Tools. Once mastered, they give the developer an incredibly powerful toolset. However, programmers new to the platform may find themselves overwhelmed by the mass of options, dialogs and executables.

In his book Android Developer Tools Essentials author Mike Wolfson aims to guide the programmer through hassles, pitfalls and misconceptions. Its 13 chapters are well-written and fun to read. After the necessary setup Wolfson shows the reader how to configure and use devices and emulators. The following two chapters introduce Eclipse and Android Studio, the new ide of choice being a fork of JetBrains IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition.After Testing your Code the author details on how to simulate sensor and telephony events. Build Tools and Monitoring System Resources cover advanced developer tasks, as to the remaining three chapters which focus on creating and testing user interfaces.

The only book of it's kind.

Any book you see on Voodoo today, is either talking about Santeria or Haitian Voodou. Even the "New Orleans Voodoo Tarot" is mostly Voodoo from OUTSIDE of New Orleans. Here you will find the most mature research on Marie Laveau, which is worth the modest price of this book, alone. But you also get history that you will not find anywhere else. Tales of an entire lineage of conjure men and root doctors, the real heart of Louisiana Hoodoo. This book introduces you to men like Doctor Koku, Rooster, Papa Melon, Don Pedro and many others. If you want to see both sides of the New Orleans Voodoo coin, this is the only book that pulls back all the curtains of it's history.

I really don't understand the negative reviews of this book at all. Even Anne Rice recommends it and what better recommendation about voodoo history in New Orleans can you get than Anne Rice!?! Yes, the story is old, but it's a fantastic look of the smaller details of a hidden culture. I love New Orleans, and Tallant's book is well researched. Why do you think it's been reprinted since the 1940s. That's staying power, people. The history of Marie Lavaeu is worth the money. This is not a book to tell you how to practice voodoo or to give you a romanticized version of the religion. This is a book which tells the evolution of a special society within a very special city. Now excuse me while I go fetch another praline! Buy it. It's a great read. [From a person who knows and loves New Orleans and hoodoo too!]
