About the Author
Grant Allen has worked in the IT field for over 20 years, as a CTO, enterprise architect, and database administrator. Grant's roles have covered private enterprise, academia and the government sector around the world, specialising in global-scale systems design, development, and performance. He is a frequent speaker at industry and academic conferences, on topics ranging from data mining to compliance, and technologies such as databases (DB2, Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL), content management, collaboration, disruptive innovation, and mobile ecosystems like Android. His first Android application was a task list to remind him to finish all his other unfinished Android projects. Grant works for Google, and in his spare time is completing a Ph.D on building innovative high-technology environments. Grant is the author of Beginning DB2, and lead author of Oracle SQL Recipes and The Definitive Guide to SQLite.

I really enjoyed this book.

I felt she made choices that were really very quite difficult and unusual for Victorian times. She stuck to her guns,, and like all of us, was made to bear the consequences of her choice.

Story of futility

I did not like this book. The woman in the story endures self-imposed difficulties, with no final accomplishment. Very frustrating and annoying story. Only suggested for those highly interested in women's studies.

Roland Rotz, Ph.D., is a licensed child and adult psychologist, director of the Lifespan Development Center in Carpinteria, California, and a nationally recognized expert on ADD, giving presentations regionally and nationally. Dr. Rotz specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of ADD and co-occurring conditions, including chronic disorganization. Sarah D. Wright, M.S., A.C.T., is a professional personal coach, one of the few in the nation trained specifically to work with people affected by ADD. Finally, A Book That Makes Sense For Those With ADD

There are several super books on the subject of Attention Deficit Disorder and each has sections that stand out. However, "Fidget To Focus" is the one book that has it all. It explains the reasons why people with ADD do the things they do AND offers excellent suggestions and solutions, too. What I like best about the book is that it isn't trying to change anyone but instead encourages readers to use their unique (and natural) tendencies to their advantage. Finally, the workbook in the back is an excellent resource for people who are really serious about finding ways to make the most of their ADD.

This is a practicAL approach to helping us with ADD/ADHD. Dr Rotz uses many examples one can apply to keeping ones attention.

I still drink a glass of water before bedtime so that I can wake up on time. From his years of experience as a therapist, he cleverly gleaned practical ideas from those with ADD/ADHD.

Very informative book

Once I started to read the book, I couldn't put it down! I kept underlying so much on every page ( one of the strategies I use to stay focused ) and found many insights.

The book reads easily and flows well with stories I can relate to, clear information and understanding of ADD, and best of all, many strategies for living with ADD including an extensive workbook section that has been very helpful. Also the review and the end of the chapters is great to go back to.

Highly educational and useful, I absolutely recommend this book!

About the Author

KEN GROSSMAN is the founder of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., established in 1980. Ken's passion for good beer began when a friend showed him the basics of homebrewing. He began brewing five-gallon batches of beer on his own and soon became a proficient homebrewer. In 1976, Ken opened his own store, The Home Brew Shop, and, soon after, began building a small brewery in the town of Chico, California. His goal: to brew exceptional ales and lagers. An avid backpacker, Ken named the new company for his favorite hiking grounds—the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Finally, on November 15, 1980, the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. brewed the first batch of what would soon become a landmark in American craft brewing: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Today, the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. is considered one of the premier craft breweries in the United States.

A Great Look Behind the Curtain

I really enjoyed this story. Sierra Nevada was the first "craft beer" I tried back in the mid 90's, and I still vividly remember my first "Bigfoot", which lead to me starting to brew. So for me, learning the story behind the beer was very personal and special.

Brewers, beer lovers, and Sierra Nevada enthusiasts will really enjoy this story. But it's a story of entrepreneurship and business philosophy as well. It also made me think about my business and my employees.

As you read it particularly towards the end open a Sierra Nevada and drink it while you read, the dedication to quality really comes through in the beer. For me that brings it all together!

Great story, not so great writing

This is an awesome story! Being a local to Chico, I have grown up with Sierra Nevada. It was very interesting reading about how this brewery grew so fast. There were many sections that seemed to repeat themselves though. I would definitely suggest this for anyone interested in brewing history!

In the valley of the blind...

This is a very straight translation written by someone who does not know the subject well. His secondary sources, Imamura Yoshio and Watanabe Ichiro, were also known as academics who didn't concern themselves with how well their academic extrapolations matched up with the living tradition of their subject. In short, Mr. Sato has translated words here, but doesn't really know what the words mean.
Here is a concrete example of exactly why this is dangerous. Mr.Sato translates thus: "There may be a hundred combat postures, but there is only one purpose: to win. Ultimately, all this depends on 'shujishuriken'. You may teach or learn the use of the sword in a hundred ways, in a thousand ways, and you may be able to handle the whole array of combat postures and sword positions. But 'shujishuriken' is central"
He then passes on some archaic details (from academic sources) relating to "shujishuriken", even discussing - for Pete's sake - ninjas, but displays no understanding of the term himself.
Despite the fact that the text clearly states that the mastery of the myriad of forms is meaningless if you don't understand the essence of "shujishuriken", Mr.Sato doesn't seem to twig on idea that translating the words of a book without understanding "what it's really about" is an academic exercise of little importance.
Since clear explanations of much of the terminology ARE available, for instance in the book "Yagyu Shinkage Ryu Dogen" by the 21st headmaster of the school, Yagyu Nobuharu, I would not recommend Mr.Sato's work, as he seems comfortable with simply massaging the words.

One philosophy

To be exact, this book is a translation of Yagyu Munenori's treatise on swordsmanship. It talks a lot about spiritual and mental aspects of swordsmanship, particularly from a Zen standpoint. But it must be remembered that this only one philosophy on swordsmanship. The book contains the complete text, plus translated excerpts from Takuan's (a Zen master) letter to Munenori about Zen and swordsmanship and Takuan's letter to Ono Tadaaki (another master swordsman). Serious students of Japanese swordsmanship will know about this book already but it is a good read for those interested in Zen and its incorporation in martial arts.

"Men are normal, women are deficient" is the tacit message our culture instills, asserts California social psychologist Taviris. In a valuable, enlightening roadmap to sanity for women and men, she argues that there is far more substantial evidence for similarity between the sexes than for differences. She refutes ecofeminists and other theorizers who claim that women are more empathic and peace-loving than men. She disputes feminist historians who argue on shaky grounds for worldwide prehistoric matriarchies centered on Mother Goddess worship; she debunks feminist psychoanalysts who, she says, reinforce Freud's notion that men and women are inevitably worlds apart psychologically. Rejecting the notion that women are less sexual, Tavris deflates the stereotype of the "coy female" propagated in sociobiology and pop psychology texts. Her lively study explores how society "pathologizes" women though psychiatric diagnoses, sexist divorce rulings and images of females as "moody," "self-defeating" or "unstable." She also presents evidence that women's expectations about premenstrual syndrome, a stigmatizing label for a natural set of bodily changes, may actually influence their symptoms. Tavris, a social psychologist best known for Anger ( LJ 1/1/83) presents a considered and comprehensive analysis of how women are measured against men in society. She examines why women are not inferior, superior, or the same as men. Comparisons have led to labeling men as "normal" and women who do not perform physically, sexually, mentally, or emotionally like them as "abnormal." Tavris argues that the costs of these measurements have been, and continue to be, substantial for women. She also presents careful and convincing critiques of Carol Gilligan, author of In a Different Voice (Harvard Univ. Pr., 1982) and other works on the psychology of women such as codependency, and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders . Tavris articulates and synthesizes convoluted philosophical arguments easily. The result is an accessible, thorough, and enjoyable feminist overview of women in society. Social psychologist Tavris (Anger: The Misunderstood Emotion, 1983) unveils society's systemic and often unconscious definition of the male as the norm against which women must measure up or be found deficient--a provocative and thought-provoking look at how sexism persists today. That women have lower self-esteem than men, are less self- confident, are more likely to repress their anger, and are more open to their feelings: these are societal truisms analyzed in every women's magazine in the country, Tavris says, as she points out that the question of how women compare to men has long held scientific researchers, doctors, psychologists and, today, cultural feminists in thrall. What is nearly always missed in such comparisons, the author adds, is that women are being compared, positively or negatively, to a male ``norm''--thus advancing an erroneous assumption of ``opposites'' and, in negative comparisons, pathologizing normal female ways of being. Illustrating her premise by pointing out the unlikelihood of finding a bookstore filled with manuals aimed at helping men overcome their tendency to be more conceited than women, to assess their abilities less realistically than women, or to have more difficulty than women in maintaining attachments, Tavris analyzes how the treatment of normal female processes as abnormal (physical reactions to menstruation become a ``syndrome'' that debilitates; women floundering under society- caused difficulties combining child care and work are diagnosed as ``depressed''; workers' time off for pregnancies is shoved into the category of ``disability leave''; cultural feminists' belief in women's ``natural'' superiority allows men to proceed, unquestioned, with their own ``natural'' careerist lives) cripple efforts toward true equality and mutual enhancement between the sexes. Greater awareness of the diversity of ``normal'' human behaviors is needed, Tavris says, if we are to view one another with unblinkered eyes. A classic on women's identity & power

Carol Tavris, Ph.D., is a social psychologist who lectures and writes on many aspects of psychology. Her brilliant book, Anger: the Misunderstood Emotion, is a classic, and this book promises to become one, too.
In Mismeasure of Woman, Dr. Tavris carefully exposes the origins and structure of the prevailing habit of virtually all societies, even our so-called "enlightened" one, of describing men--particularly socially powerful men--as the "norm" and derogatorily measuring women in comparison to them. Dr. Tavris's direct, concise, highly readable prose is filled with documented examples showing that the differences between men and women are not primarily biological. Instead, they are created by socially mandated discrepancies in power, resource allocation and life experience.
Though many feminists have written about the relegating of women to penis-envying, second-class men, I consider Dr. Tavris one of the most clear and persuasive of those speaking out against this "mismeasure of woman." In this book, I believe she does a better job of describing the extent of the problem, and is very inspiring in brainstorming possible solutions.

Balanced and Rational!

I found this book to be well reasoned, well written and thought provoking. I am not saying that I agree with everything (I completely disagree with her assertion that same-sex schools are ok for women but not for men) but in most cases I found her insight to be refreshing.
An example of such insight: it is often claimed that women students have poor self esteem due to the fact that males score higher on "self-esteem" inventories. She points out that this could well be due to the fact that women mature quicker and therefore have a more realistic picture of themselves; that is, this is a case in which it is wholly inappropriate to compare women to the *men's* standard.
In short, she has helped me understand that "equal treatment" is not always the same as "fair treatment".
I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in seeing a feminist point of view that is NOT inherently anti-male.
