entertaining reading, but has a weak plot

The story concerns childhood bullies, childhood friendship, and childhood romance--themes well familiar to the intended audience. But the writer relies on some improbabilities to keep the story moving:

--Why does Harry become infatuated with our lovely Korean heroine? Because she brings a frog to school, and frogs are icky, and Harry likes anything that is icky.

--How does the narrator learn of Harry's secret? Because love notes keep falling out of his pocket.

--Why is our heroine so averse to people fighting with each other? Because her uncle was killed in the Korean War, which took place long before any children living today were even born.

It's a nice story, though.

An adult can read this book in a half-hour.

Don't walk away from this book: run!

From the back cover: "[...] no matter how powerful the language, it is still far too easy to write poor programs. [...]". The code examples in this book prove exactly this point.
The authors mention the ISO/ANSI C++ standard and claim to follow it "wherever possible" (sic). However, they make so many false statements that I seriously doubt that they have ever consulted the ISO/ANSI Standard documents, or any of the excellent text books on modern C++ design and coding practice (Cline, Meyers, Sutters.)
I believe (and I'm not alone) that in a modern C++ course std::vector should be introduced before arrays, and std::string before const char*. Not only are they safer, they are also *a lot* easier to use, and make it possible to come up with more interesting programming exercises than the endless array of meaningless numerical computations. Unfortunately, many instructors and authors consider std::vector and std::string to be "advanced topics", and torture their students and readers with the old stuff they had to learn themselves ten or more years ago. The authors belong to this category, I'm afraid: they learned C, and think that they know C++.
Let's have the book speak for itself.
Page 28:
"While C++ allows declarations and statements to be intermixed, we believe that functions should be organized for readability. Therefore, we continue to follow the C organizational concept that places declarations first in a function, followed by its statements."
On a related note, on page 40 the authors write:
"One final point about initializing variables when they are defined: Although the practice is convenient and saves you a line of code, it also can lead to errors. It is better, therefore, to initialize the variable with an assignment statement at the proper place in the body of the code. This may take another statement, but the efficiency of the program is exactly the same, and you will make fewer errors in your code."
(My comments:) It is commonly accepted by knowledgeable C++ programmers that the practice of declaring variables near the point of their first use in one of the things that makes C++ a better C. It is the old style that leads to errors (forgetting to initialize variables) and maintenance problems (variables that are no longer used, but are still in the declaration section). Furthermore, it is considered good style to prefer initialization ( int sum = 0; ) over subsequent declaration and assignment ( int sum; sum = 0; ). The former is always more efficient, and the difference can be substantial when dealing with large objects for which construction is expensive. You may argue that this is of no concern for beginning C++ programmers, but I disagree; habits, both good and bad, form early.

From the code example on page 363: bool binarySearch (int list[ ], int end, int target, int &locn){ ... }
(My comments:) The first argument should be const-qualified: const int list[ ]
Not only does this protect the programmer from inadvertently changing any of the values stored in the array; it also makes it possible to use the function with const int[] arguments (which would fail to compile with the original code). The const keyword is an important asset of the C++ language, and students should be trained to use it properly from the beginning. Using the Standard Template Library will drive programmers who are not aware of const-correctness issues insane. The book is extremely sloppy in the const-correctness area.

Page 119:
"If a function has not been declared or defined before it is used, C++ will assume that you will provide that information when you link the program. Since there are no specifications, C++ will also assume that the return type is integer and that the parameter types correctly match the formal definitions."
(My comments:) This is not true: in C++, functions have to be declared before they are used, and there is no such thing as 'implicit return type int'. C++ really is different from K&R-style C.

On page 195, the following insight is highlighted:
"The else-if is an artificial C++ construct that is only used when
1. The selection variable is not an integral, and
2. The same variable is being tested in the expressions."
(My comments:) No further questions here, your honor.

It gets really interesting when the authors express their ideas on Object-Oriented programming. They claim that Object-Oriented programming is just a different view, but that the implementation is exactly the same as in structured programming. They are probably misguided by their own example of an elevator simulation program (in the chapter on classes), which is simply a structured program wrapped in a class, and has nothing to do with OO.

I wish I could give this a zero!

Spend your money wisely and get another book. This book is poorly written in what seems to be a foreign language. The phrase "it's Greek to me" certainly applies here. This book contains grammatical and spelling errors alike. The coding is incomplete and as a student of C++ I find it outrageous that computer science professors require this book as a textbook. All in all do not buy, try C++ Primer Plus.

This book was required for class, and my teacher specifically recommended the 4th edition because it was cheaper and had everything in it that we needed to know.

There is so much information in here about loans, taxes and investments that people need to know. If you have been wanting to learn more about finance - and how it affects your life and your future, this book is a great place to start.

No Access Card was Included

I love my Pearson Personal Finance book! This book explains everything from ratios to tricks with your taxes using easy to understand explanations and fun corrolations to well-known tv shows. It is everything and more than I had hoped for upon purchasing it. When I bought it, though, it said that it included the access card for the MyFinanceLab and eText online. I never received the card and had to purchase, again, the MyFinanceLab seperately at $55. This book had already cost me almost $200 which was supposed to include the MyFinanceLab, but it wound up costing me a lot more. I would give the book alone 5 stars, however the unincluded MyFinanceLab brings that score down. Make sure before purchasing this, the access card is indeed included when you buy the Personal Finance and MyFinanceLab package.

It makes it easy for a beginner like to me to learn

I am very much enjoying the color coded notes/chords. It makes it easy for a beginner like to me to learn. The chord wheels have thus far been very fun to use - I like how the I/IV/V wheel shows the chords with fingerings. I am having great fun playing different strumming patterns with a set of I/IV/V chords, then rotating the wheel, getting a different set of I/IV/V chords, and then trying the same strumming patterns again. I look forwards to mastering this product, and then purchasing the "advanced" version.

Kris Bryant grew up a military brat living in several different countries before her family settled down in the Midwest when she was twelve. Books were her only form of entertainment overseas, and she read anything and everything within her reach. Reading eventually turned into writing when she decided she didn't like the way some of the novels ended and wanted to give the characters she fell in love with the ending she thought they so deserved.

Earning a B.A. in English from the University of Missouri, Kris focused more on poetry, and after some encouragement from her girlfriend, decided to tackle her own book.

If you are looking for a light, sweet, romance, that is light on drama, this book is for you.
With so many romance novels weighed down by a plethora of angst and conflict, it was a nice break to read a book with just enough of those things to keep it interesting. No cheating. No major family drama. Just two wonderful characters falling in love.

This is the kind of love story I love to read. I was cheering on Ki from page one. I like how we didn't know how Taryn felt about Ki. We had an idea but not sure. Once I started this book I couldn't put it down. The love scene was beautifully written. I would definitely recommend this book.

At age 21, Yves St. Laurent took over as head of the prestigious House of Dior; at age 25, he opened his own firm; and after a lifetime of achievement, he has now announced his upcoming retirement. To mark this event, these books are being published in conjunction with 5, avenue Marceau, a documentary on his incredible 40-year career. LIFE photographer Boulat offers a photomontage of the young St. Laurent in his first year as an independent designer, while Teboul (the director of the documentary) jumps ahead to focus on the step-by-step operations of putting together the show for his Spring 2002 line. To his credit, Teboul does provide some background information on the designer, including childhood photos, a biographical chronology, reproductions of early newspaper clippings (from the scrapbooks of St. Laurent's mother), a complete checklist of his major shows, and four pages of notable St. Laurent quotes. Nonetheless, except for the childhood photos, neither the people nor the activities in any of the pictures are identified. (Perhaps they will be in the documentary.) The publisher describes Teboul's as the "definitive volume," but in fact neither book sheds much light on St. Laurent's life or career. The hundreds of photos are fun to look through (especially when they convey the energy and oftentimes frantic pace of putting together a show), but both books disappoint for lack of comprehensive documentation of this important designer's work. Not the definitive look at the universe of YSL

Though the producers and editors of this book have obviously taken great care and reverence in assembling the images seen in this hefty Rizzoli hardcover edition, it is nonetheless lacking.
There is an eight-page, albeit in very-large typeface, essay extolling the philosophy behind the decades of YSL's influence and visions of modern fashion, as well as journal entries in Yves Saint Laurent's own handwriting that are written mostly in French. There are several famous quotes from him: among them the most famous of all "there is nothing more beautiful than a naked body."
The photographs number in the hundreds, though only a handful of family photographs from YSL's childhood in Oran, Algeria are captioned with names. Otherwise, the documentary's images shot mostly in the atelier at 5 avenue Marceau are without caption or description, though you can discern the sense of creativity and endless discussion that is the process of the haute couture. The masterpieces of tailleur (suits) and flou (dresses) are often one-of-a-kind. Their numbers are usually limited to one or two copies, so the 2000 or so women who can afford the prices are not likely to see someone else wearing that same opera coat or evening gown which ends up photographed in the society pages of Paris and New York among other places. If you are paying $50,000 for a hand-embroidered Lesage suit jacket, you don't want to see it on the shoulders of a half-dozen of your fellow couture followers. Ca marche pas!
Most interestingly the editors did not include many quotes from some of Saint Laurent's inner circle, except for a small contribution from his life and business partner, Pierre Berge. There is one short blurb from Catherine Deneuve, but no words from Loulou de la Falaise or Betty Catroux, or even Marie Munoz, directrice of the YSL atelier for years. There are some very old press clippings from the 50s and 60s when YSL was hitting the peaks of creativity, but very little from the pinnacle of his career, which would be most of the 1970s. In the 70s we witnessed some of the greatest moments in fashion history with the Chinese and Russian collections that set the trends for womens' wear for years after the clothes were shown in Paris.
The book is full of images, but short on text. For those who are unfamiliar with all the innovations introduced for women's clothing, their number is second only to that of those brought forth by Coco Chanel. Saint Laurent created the women's pantsuit, the "smoking" or women's tuxedo, the trenchcoat, the safari look, khaki, the list goes on and on. Seeing the documentary would be more than helpful, as it would fill in many of the gaps.
A beautiful book that leaves you only wanting much more...

Who is this book for?

O.k. first, let me say, it's my own fault. With picture books it's best to have a look to see if you really want to spend the $. I didn't. I made an assumption that with YSL retiring this would be a retrospective of his glorious career. Not so. Fuzzy, boring, behind the scenes pictures of people at work in his atelier. Very few dresses and those shown aren't shown well. All in all a disappointment.

More than the man

If you are looking for a book about the designer YSL look somewhere else. If however you are interested in the flow of fashion design as done by YSL then this is a wonderful creation. To me it feels like a work of gratitude to all those involved behind the YSL name.
